Food! Last year on Sunday I went to Coal House Pizza, a few blocks away from the hotel [the main hotel, this year, as we have a backup too]. It's New Haven style pizza aka Apizza..pretty good! I saved a little money as Sun was half price pizza day. This bit of FB shows they have their own unique style down there.

Also recommend Donut Delite (great breakfast sandwiches and donuts) across from main hotel...a Chinese place a few blocks away...and cheesesteaks or hot dogs at Weinery on a side street

Weinery indeed good, went twice. A couple fans of my classic cartoons panel saw me there and we talked. Good service indeed. When FP was in Cromwell there was Ted's Steamed Hamburgers nearby. But that has closed (orig location in Meriden still there I think)

Ted's..no longer in Cromwell.
At Furpoc in the Cromwell days I never did stay in the mold infested Red Lion. Usually went to Motel 6 about 7 mi up I 91, and one night at Courtyard Marriott. Staying in Cromwell Super 8 the night before the con this yr (as I did last year)...so I can be closer to Stamford next day.
Will have to try Cromwell Diner. The S8 has a grab and go breakfast

At the FD that was held in 21 at Valley Forge Casino I brought up the Red Lion during a con horror stories panel. Vids on youtube show the horrible conditions now (abandoned property explorers). A couple months after FP 2019 the hotel was abruptly shut down for tax delinquency--eventually it's to be torn down for housing

I take Thu off as well so I can get down there most of the way instead of a long 3 or 3.5 hr drive Fri morning. I have lots of vacation time. A few times I used sick leave to get a day...

For now I’m using a PC in the corner with a decent graphics card in it for 3-D rendering. It’s basically a one GPU render farm for the Mac.

That machines for 3-D, rendering and VR and motion capture - I run it using a loopback dongle and I run it headless so the iPad remotes into it. All I need that is for launching VR programs and monitoring GPU temperatures anyway.

For VR I currently use the OG HTC vibe. I added the wireless kit for it, which was great so I don’t have any tethering to the computer at all. I like the idea of it but I think I’ll wait for the second generation I generally don’t beta test apples, first generation gear, even though I do beta test all of their OSes.

yeah, I mean if you take the money you would’ve put into a car and build it into your business you know you can buy quite a lot and if you’re really picky about what you get it can last a long time don’t fall for the cheap things that you have to buy multiple times that’s what they want you to do but also don’t get the halo products either because that’s also what they want you to do. I’d like to try out the vision pro to see what the hype is all about with AR, but I can’t see myself affording it. I’m quite curious about how it works with FaceTime and other video conferencing apps. They say they use a 3D “digital persona” which “allows others to see you while you’re wearing Apple Vision Pro. It’s a dynamic, natural representation of your face and hand movements while you’re using FaceTime.”

Exactly. Buy quality that’ll last you a long time, not something cheap that’ll keep breaking and you’ll have to keep replacing and cost you more in the long run.
I do love driving but between tolls and gas and insurance and registration it does add up quickly, so I definitely agree with you. I’d likely still keep my license so if the need arises I could rent.

it’s a different thing. The satellite 911 uses communication between the handset and the satellite to reach 911 or 911 relay centers. The satellite roadside assistance uses that infrastructure to reach out for car breakdowns.

Yes. Both can be considered life safety applications but one is more critical and urgent than the other. Having your car breakdown* is not as urgent as a medical emergency or being trapped upside down in your car after a car accident.
* With exception of your car breaking down in Death Valley or in a blizzard.


There’s actually a pretty amazing story that came out last month about how the 911 SOS was used during the Maui fire.

There’s a number of YouTube videos by professional hikers and travelers that have pitted the 14 series Satellite tech to the traditional dedicated GPS transponders and it’s quite interesting. Both use different companies and both of have different limitations and price points however having it baked into the phone is quite convenient.

Last winter I got into a car wreck and my car got stuck. I had 2 phones on me, one was VZ and the other was on TMO
neither had service, but the TMO phone connected after it roamed

was able to use that to call for help (and called someone local to me to help)

Verizon can domestic roam on AT&T using LTE band 17 and VoLTE. AT&T roams on Verizon using LTE band 66 and VoLTE. If using Apple iMessage or Google’s Messenger it’s treated as data. I’m not sure about SMS but I suspect that’ll work too.

T-Mobile is the same way in certain places. When I take the Amtrak route from Utica NY to NYC, some parts must roam(either you turn on roaming or you get disconnected), other parts can roam(you're allowed to roam but T-Mobile has their own service), and some parts do not allow roaming

The coverage there is non-existent. Back when 3G existed, you could get that on AT&T but that was it
T-mo kinda sorta works there but it's not reliable. AT&T has like 1 bar of 4G/5G now, but it's also not reliable, and Verizon has basically nothing at all, and never did. If the new tower happened, it would result in a great service all in that part of town

After the shutdown of GSM and 2G a lot of cars were left SOL and disconnected because they couldn’t be upgraded to the new technology. This makes me apprehensive of things being baked into cars. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto does it right by using the data connection of the phone to display the infotainment stuff.

No. It doesn’t answer your phone with an AI. It just silences the calls and sends to voicemail, which is where the visual voicemail comes in handy as you can then see what they want and stuff.

Apple’s been working on this for a number of years with transcribing people’s voicemail into text form, I.e. visual voicemail, but that was done in the backend by the phone and only after the voicemail was left. This was unfortunate for sure. I remember when this happened. Also that lean to in the photo background is next to where I set up camp when doing my research. I was there in August filming for the video I’m working on now actually. Some one actually drowned right in from of there. It’s known an area of supernatural activity as well.
